From the Earth

ARKEN Museum of Modern Art

21 May to 25 September 2022

ARKEN presents works by artists Silas Inoue and Nina Nowak, who each bring their own bold, sculptural sensibilities to bear on works that rethink issues concerned with value and resources. The works unpack and unfold important narratives about humanity’s complex relationship with nature and its many minerals and metals – elements on which we all depend.

The fundamentals of modern life Bauxite, zinc and lithium. Minerals and metals – many of which few people have ever heard of – have become crucial to our daily lives. Without them, we would have no smartphones or computers. At the same time, large-scale extraction of such resources affects nature and humans alike. Right from industrial pollution of our drinking water to poorly controlled production conditions that endanger human lives. How should we relate to technology and to each other at a time when the consumption of resources contributes to progress and poverty alike?

At this year’s outdoor summer exhibition From the Earth, a range of spectacular works take over The Art Island – works which raise questions about nature’s resources and the value we assign to it. Featuring works by artists Silas Inoue (b. 1981) and Nina Nowak (b. 1984), the exhibition examines how humans have exchanged nature’s resources for profit for centuries – a trade-off where no returns are possible. The exhibition speaks into a time when the climate crisis and resource-intensive technology increasingly require us to rethink our concepts of value and resources. Here, two young contemporary artists offer their takes on how we may comprehend nature’s resources: what they are, where they come from and what kind of imprint their extraction leaves on the landscape. And, of course, what kind of imprint they make on us.
